Read below to learn about recent and upcoming events that our attorneys have participated in.

 

On October 15th Mike Longyear gave a presentation to the Yakima Estate Planning Council on Elder Law in Washington State: Key Issues and Considerations. Carla Calogero and Emily Tyson-Shu prepared the presentation in collaboration with Mike. They all serve on the Executive Committee of Washington State Bar Elder Law Section.

 

On October 19th Emily Tyson-Shu was invited to present on Estate Planning and Probate to the Taipei First Girls High School Alumni Association at the Redmond Public Library.

 

On October 20th Emily Tyson-Shu was invited by the People’s Memorial Association to speak as part of the Ducks in a Row series, in partnership with the City of Mercer Island. The presentation, held at the Mercer Island Community and Event Center, focused on Estate Planning and Probate and was tailored to benefit elderly attendees.

 

On October 22nd Mike Longyear was part of a “NEXUS” panel presentation “THE HAUNTED ESTATE PLAN” at the Aegis of Laurelhurst near U Village. The panel included Brock Bennion of Kimball Creek Partners, Jeff Piha of Sweeney Conrad, P.S., and Lisa Mayfield of Aging Wisdom on care management. Mike and the other panel members discussed “scary scenarios” in estate and life planning that individuals and families encounter. Strategies and proactive planning steps to consider were shared with the audience by the panelists followed by a “Q&A” session.

 

On October 30th and 31st Reed Longyear attorneys, Mike Longyear, Carla Calogero, Anton Cauthorn, Josh Reinertson, Lesley Novotny, Daniel Kim, and Emily Tyson-Shu will attend the annual Estate Planning Conference sponsored by the Seattle Estate Planning Council. This two-day intensive program addresses changes in state and Federal tax law, current case law, and statutory changes. The program includes national and regional speakers on these important planning issues and consideration. Program attendees are from throughout the northwest and California.

 

On November 9th Reed Longyear is hosting/sponsoring a film premier “The Last Ecstatic Days” – that the Boston Globe reviewed as a “… courageous end of life chronicle, which overflows with compassion”. November 14th is the annual King County Bar Association Probate Administration CLE. Mike Longyear of Reed Longyear and Ken Kilbreath co-chair this program that takes the attendees through the process of opening a probate, marshalling assets, and identifying creditors, preparing the inventory, addressing income and estate tax issues, protecting the interests of minors and incapacitated persons, and making distributions and transfers from the estate to close the probate. A King County Superior Court Commissioner shares “Tips from the Bench” that are helpful for attorneys and staff attending the program,. Reed Longyear Attorneys Josh Reinertson and Anton Cauthorn are presenting on “Non-probate Alternatives” and “Estate Income Tax Elections”.

Additionally, Emily Tyson-Shu began a new leadership role as CLE Co-Chair for the WSBA Taxation Section Executive Committee (October 2025 – September 2026).
